The Do-It Yourself Guide
If you want to build your own site, here is a step-by-step guide on how

issues. 20 steps to creating a website:
- Find a company selling domain names
- Select a domain name that fits your needs
- Identify and select a reputable hosting service provider
(what’s a hosting provider?)
- Register the domain name with hosting provider,
choose Admin, Technical, Billing contacts, and choose payment plan
- Set up e-mail account on your new domain
to forward e-mail to your existing inbox
- Choose and purchase web design software
to create your site
- Choose and purchase graphics software
to create logos, icons, and other graphics.
- Create website structure
- Create page designs/layout
- Create all graphical logos, icons, etc. to
match design colors with hexadecimal precision
- Optimize graphics file format
to achieve fastest download speeds
- Decide on font faces, styles, sizes, colors
to use throughout the site
- Create website content using HTML and web design software
with links between pages
- Create meta tags for each page
(what’s a meta tag?) for search engine (what’s a search engine?) and
browser displays
- Using FTP (file transfer protocol) software,
upload your site to the hosting provider
- Check to see that pages display properly in all major versions
of Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Netscape, and AOL browsers
- Register your site with search engines
- Track usage of your site
(visitors, page views, user agents, etc…)
- Learn new programming language
such as Java, Javascript or PHP to make your pages more dynamic
- Use telnet, SSH, and shellscript to manage files on your site
For any changes to your site, repeat steps 10-20 above
